One of my aspirations for Kyoto was to see a real Geisha or Maiko (student-Geisha). I was so lucky to see this intriguing lady at the Arashiyama bamboo forest.
What is Geisha?
Geisha is a Japanese word for "person of art." A geisha entertains people through singing, playing instrument, Traditional dance, story-telling, attentiveness and flirtation. She can speak about politics as easily as she can explain the rules of a drinking game. There is something mysterious about Geisha, with her makeup, hair, clothing and manner: the illusion of female perfection.
Best time and place to spot Geisha would be in Pontocho en Gion (hanmikoji dori street between yasaka en kamo river) from 17:00 – 19:00h or at the gion corner around 18 O’clock.
