Day 2 - Pangasinan here we come!

Today we planned to go on a roadtrip to a coastal area about 250km north of Manila, called Pangasinan. We were initially unsure if it was worth the visit, but it turned out to be an awesome destination and lovely adventure. The first day of our roadtrip will be described in today's blogpost... We woke up early, went for a quick rice breakfast with some pork meat; sunny-side-up-omelet and pineapple juice. I was rather surprised we were given only a spoon to eat, but that is custom in Philippines. Just a funny detail and at least it is easier than the chopsticks in Japan. We were Busog (full) and ready for the day! After that we packed our bags and went to the bus station of Cubao. It was the first time I saw the Philippines by day light. Cubao is an urban area. The streets were narrow with electricity cables overhanging; concrete sidewalks had huge holesas well as the concretebuildings; stray dogs crossing the dusty road. Clouds of smoke came from cars, tricycles and citizens who made a fire in front of their stalls. It was a fascinating sight, giving me reflection about the western world I am used to live in.

We asked around where the busstation was located. A kind old man with Manny Pacquiao hat explained us patiently and with a smile. While I was looking up and gazing the streets, Jaynee saved me a few times stepping in dog shit. Watch out!! haha. Public transport often has no time schedule in Philippines. They leave when they are loaded enough with passengers. Luckily the bus was nearly full, so our trip started quickly and smooth. We took the Victory liner bound for Alaminos, PANGASINAN here we come!

For only 450p it brought us in 5 ½ hours to Alaminos. At each stop snacks and drinks were provided/sold. They even supplied us some Buko pie (pie from young coconut) and a TV screen showed some old western cowboy movies. Jaynee provided some fun games on her phone and we enjoyed the views outside. We were excited when the sea started to show itself between the mountains.

Once arrived in Alaminos some tricycles were waiting to give us a ride. After a short negotiation, we squeezed ourself in a Tricycle. The ride was another thrilling experience for me, so close to the road and the loud motorcycle engine! He brought us for 50php to our traditional Filipino guest house. Pangasinan is a famous Filipino tourist area, famous for the beautiful beaches and culinary foods.

At the guesthouse we were first welcomed by 2 dogs a cat and several chickens. The owner showed us the cozy homes and gave us some tips were to go. It was a little late and getting darker to visit Bolinao Beach, so we decided to visit the town center.

We went to the market area for the ingredients to cook ourselves a typical Filipino diner. The market was an experience by itself. It is huge markethal with long tables where meats were sold. From chicken breast to pig meats, even chicken feet and pork snouts. . Some were covered with flies, but we found a stall that looked fresh and people were waving to keep any fly on a safe distance. Any Filipino experts that know what we will cook yet? A typical Filipino trait is to ask around whatever you need to have or need directions. Everybody seems to be happy to help you. I readily copied that, although people often answered in Tagalog looking at Jaynee XD. At the supermarket we bought a bottle of red wine and spaghetti ingredients for the next day. We raced home by tricycle to start the cooking proces. Alona, the owner of the guest house was so kind to let us abuse their kitchen. She provided us with tips to prepare the ADOBONG MANOK;). The food smelled so good and her daughters were singing beautifully in the background. I felt like I can get used to this place :)

After we cook ADOBONG MANOK in couple of minutes, finally we took our plates to our home sit down in the open air at our porch. After a quick toast with the wine (Tagay!) we could try our first made diner.

The taste of the Adobong was heavenly. The dish was so rich in taste, the chicken so tasty and tender, the flavours blending perfectly with the potatoes. Amazing recipe.

After diner the owner asked us if we wanted to join a boat tour next day to the 100 islands nearby. We could join 2 others (we were not sure if she said they are ‘friends’ or ‘French’), but we were happy with the opportunity and decided to sign up for it. The boatsman told us he would pick us up at 7am next morning. And we could split the cost with the Friends/French. That evening we visited the SariSari store for more drinks. Jaynee explained how I could ask for it in Tagalog: Pabili nga po isang bote nang Red Horse... but halfway the sentence I forget the correct words and said something totally not understandable. At least everybody had a good laugh. It was an unforgettable night with good conversations and hilarious games. Next morning we woke up with the smallest eyes, but it was funny and funny.
